Title:Fieldworks in sociolinguistics and language education

Abstract:This seminar targets at students and faculty members who are interested in doing fieldworks for their research projects on sociolinguistics and (English) language education. The seminar comprises a brief overview to the tradition of fieldworks, classical models of doing fieldworks, and important ethical issues to be considered. Important tips regarding fieldwork design, data collection, and data analysis will also be presented. The tips will be illustrated with empirical case studies that have been conducted in various sociolinguistic contexts.
Speaker bio
Dr Lianjiang Jiang is an Assistant Professor in English Language Education at Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. He is a recipient of Macau Humanities and Social Sciences Research Outstanding Achievement Award in 2022. He is on the editorial board ofJournal of Second Language Writing, Linguistics and Education, Journal of Asia TEFL, and Frontiers in Psychology. His research interests include multimodality, computer supported multimodal composing and L2 writing and feedback. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed research articles in SSCI-indexed journals such as TESOL Quarterly, Journal of Second Language Writing, Computer Assisted Language Learning, Language Teaching Research, System, ELT Journal, Language, Culture and Curriculum, Educational Technology Research and Development, and Technology, Pedagogy and Education. He has authored one textbook and his online course in public speaking has been listed in the National First-class Courses by Ministry of Education, China in 2018. His research projects have been funded by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, and Higher Education Fund of Macau.
